Brunton needed only one win to surpass the previous record of 88 that he shared with his father David that they set in 2009-10 when they trained in partnership.

Brunton branched out on his own three years ago and he is about to make it three premierships in succession.

Brunton broke the record in the first of nine races when his pint-sized filly Rubinic kept her unbeaten record from two starts intact when she led throughout to win a 2YO handicap over 1200 metres.

Brunton's other winners were the well-backed Sidestreet Lad and Orange River, outsider Bastetani, the highly promising Our Shanakee while Nunivak resumed from a lengthy spell to deliver a stellar performance to win the last on the card.

"I thought I had some decent winning chances today but to end up with six wins was brilliant," Brunton said.

"You don't set out to break records and when they come along it's nice but this one is special because I never thought we'd ever have another season like we did when Dad and I trained 88 winners seven years ago.

"We race pretty much once a week so it's a fair effort to snare this many winners but it takes a whole lot of good, reliable and hard working people to make it happen and I am blessed to have that at the stables.

"I've still got Dad to guide me when needed and David Pires, who'll win his third jockeys' premiership in a row, has been great for the stable."

With three meetings remaining Brunton has a chance to reach 100 wins for the season but he admitted the bulk would have to come from the Hobart meeting in a fortnight as he doesn't travel to many to Devonport.
