Courtesy of Tasracing.com.au 25/01/16.WHEN the field lines up for the Betfair Exchange Hobart Cup in a fortnight from today there's no doubt all runners will have had more than their fair share of gallops during training for the major assignment.
But that won't be the case for the David Brunton-trained stayer Up Cup that delivered another stellar performance at UBET Park Hobart yesterday to take out the weight-for-age Summer Cup over 2200 metres.
Up Cups is not galloped between races but instead is led from a pony through the cooling and calming salt water at Seven Mile Beach that forms the basis of his training regime.
Up Cups won the Brighton Cup on January 8 and that win offered him ballot free entry into the $200,000 Betfair Exchange Hobart Cup as did yesterday's win so the five-year-old gelded son of Helike has the privilege of having won both of the races that offered up direct entry into the Tasmanian Racing Club's premier event.
Up Cups came from near last 600 metres out to storm home and grab victory in the last stride from gallant mare Geegees Goldengirl.
Listen to what Hall of Fame trainer David Brunton had to say about Up Cups and his unique training regime.
