Courtesy of Tasracing.com.au 09/01/16. THE David Brunton-trained Up Cups earned a guaranteed start in next month's Group 3 Betfair Exchange Hobart Cup by winning the Brighton Cup over 2100 metre yesterday that offered the winner ballot-free entry into the Hobart Cup.

Up Cups hit the line a neck clear of the luckless Player One with Lingo a close-up third ahead of Settler's Stone.

"This horses always tries to do his best and now that he's guaranteed a Hobart Cup start that's where he'll go but he'll race in the Summer Cup (in Hobart) in a fortnight as that will top him off nicely for the big race," he said.

Up Cups was coming off a close-up second in the Longford Cup that proved to be a good guide to the race with the winner, third-placed Lingo and fourth home Settler's Stone all coming out of the race held a week earlier.

Up Cups is owned and raced by Rick Polly and a group of family and friends.

The five-year-old gelding has won five and been placed 11 times from his 32 starts with the Brighton Cup win stake taking his career earnings to just over $91,000.
