LEADING trainers David and Scott Brunton will probably feel like immersing their lightly raced gelding Bag Of Monkeys in a box of cotton wool during his break from racing for the rest of the winter.
The stable has a high opinion of the Tough Speed-Bright Hopes gelding and it wouldn't surprise if he presented for ma crack at one of the feature races over the 2014 Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
Bag Of Monkeys went into a BM68 Handicap race over 1220 last Sunday on the back of an impressive win in a strong class one handicap (1200m) at the same track three weeks earlier.
That was his second run this preparation after opening with a first-up second to Not Another Red in Hobart May 7.
The class one win was awesome but this latest effort took all of his courage to emerge triumphant.
Spy Wears Prado led to the home turn while leading jockey Brendon McCoull had Bag Of Monkeys one-off without cover in third spot before joining the leader at the top of the home straight.
Bag Of Monkeys looked set to run straight past the leader but the grey gelding refused to wilt and it took every once of McCoull's strength to urge his mount clear close to home.
Bag Of Monkeys hit the line a neck clear of Spy Wears Prado (David Fisher) but he had to survive a protest lodged by apprentice Fisher who claimed interference over the concluding stages, however stewards quickly dismissed the objection.
Bag Of Monkeys is owned by Julie Brunton, wife and mother of the training combination.
